Physical Education
Vision
Physical activity has numerous benefits for children's physical health, as well as mental wellbeing. Children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers; physical activity increases self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and lowers anxiety and depression. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour, focus as well as enhancing academic achievement.
Our vision is for all children to experience an excellent provision of physical education (PE), school sport and physical activity that lead to life-long participation. We want children to experience how PE can enhance their levels of wellbeing, attainment and achievement and we want to create pathways for them to continue to be active beyond school. We continue to develop our links to outside agencies and clubs, which help to generate positive interaction in the community.
Our PE curriculum ensures that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing opportunities for all to be enjoyed. Our high quality PE curriculum develops and allows pupils to learn about themselves and how to live a healthy life. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as decision-making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication.
The curriculum is inclusive and ensures that pupils of all abilities access the range of activities we offer. Children are physically active for sustained periods of time which encourages them to lead healthy, active lives.
Intent
Developing pupils' personal qualities through PE can affect their attitudes towards school and learning. When PE and school sport provision is of the highest quality, all pupils will, to the best of their abilities, develop and demonstrate the following personal qualities:
- High levels of commitment to PE and school sport
- Good levels of positive behaviour such as politeness, fair play and helpfulness.
Studies show how beneficial music and movement sessions can be in developing the whole child, positively impacting upon language, mathematical thinking and brain development skills.
Our high quality PE curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We are constantly revising and improving our programme of intra and inter-school competitions, which provides opportunities for pupils to participate in competitive sports in and beyond the curriculum.
There also offer are opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles in which they can build character and embed values such as fairness and respect.
Implementation
PE is taught over two session per week. The curriculum provides children with the knowledge that regular participation in sport and physical activity can improve physical fitness, promote good health, develop skills, improve self- confidence and reduce stress.
We give children the skills and understanding to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. We ensure all pupils have a chance to experience a wide variety of sports, outdoor activities and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and health choices. PE promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It teaches children to cope with both success and failure in competitive individual and team-based sports.
As children grow up and move through the school, the challenges becomes greater, allowing children to develop their movement skills leading to confident and skilful sports players.
We aim to develop in children a love for sport, actively encouraging them to join active sports clubs and participate in healthy competitions in order to nurture a desire to better oneself.
