PE and Sports Premium Funding

What is Sport Premium Funding?

Each year, the government provides funding to primary schools to be spent on improving the quality of sport and Physical Education (PE) for school children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Examples of activities this type of funding covers are:

  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • Provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
  • Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
  • Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • Run sport competitions
  • Increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • Run sports activities with other schools.

The PE and sport premium can help primary schools to achieve this commitment, providing primary schools with £320 million of government funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered through their core budgets. It is allocated directly to schools, so they have the flexibility to use it in the way that works best for their pupils.

The school sport and activity action plan sets out the government’s commitment to ensuring that children and young people have access to at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity per day.
